Key takeaways from Almedalen: From strategy to action in life science

Collaboration, implementation and innovation were among the key themes at Almedalen Week, where stakeholders discussed how to strengthen Sweden's life science ecosystem.

Almedalen Week once again brought together stakeholders from across Sweden for discussions on the future of healthcare, research and innovation. While established life science topics such as health data, clinical trials and equitable healthcare remained high on the agenda, several broader themes emerged throughout the week.

From discussion to delivery

One of the strongest messages across many seminars and discussions was the need to move beyond talking about collaboration and focus instead on implementation. Turning strategies into concrete action was highlighted as a key priority, with increasing emphasis on ensuring delivery, follow-up and long-term impact.

Another recurring theme was the importance of challenging existing practices and regulatory approaches in order to achieve shared goals. Issues such as health data and clinical trials have been discussed for many years, and many participants called for a greater willingness to implement solutions that are known to benefit healthcare and patients.

Collaboration as a driver of progress

Collaboration was another clear priority throughout the week. Discussions focused on making better use of expertise across Sweden to strengthen equitable healthcare, build strong therapy networks and support the implementation of regional and national life science strategies.

The ongoing SweTrial calls were frequently highlighted as a practical example of how collaboration can be strengthened. At the same time, many stressed that research and clinical trials need to become a more integrated part of routine clinical practice within hospitals.

Strong interest in the Stockholm–Uppsala life science strategy

The newly adopted joint life science strategy for the Stockholm–Uppsala region also attracted considerable attention. Many stakeholders expressed high expectations for the Capital of Life initiative and the opportunities created through closer collaboration across the region's life science ecosystem.

Other recurring themes

Several additional topics featured prominently throughout the week:

  • Sweden and the other Nordic countries should aim for early and ambitious implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
  • Research and innovation activities within healthcare need to be monitored and evaluated more systematically.
  • Swedish key opinion leaders, for example within therapy networks, should play a more active role internationally and strengthen collaboration with global counterparts.
  • Interest in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) continues to grow, with many seminars and discussions focusing wholly or partly on the field.

The discussions at Almedalen reflected a shared ambition to strengthen Sweden's position in life science. A recurring conclusion was that continued collaboration, combined with a stronger focus on implementation, will be essential to translating ambition into lasting impact.
