Uppsala municipality has a long-term, strategic ambition to strengthen and further develop the life science sector as a central element in the local and regional business environment, with a focus on the global market. Drawing on Uppsala’s unique combination of entrepreneurship, world-leading academia, internationally competitive companies and a strong innovation system, the municipality works actively to create good conditions for growth, start-ups and collaboration in this field.
Uppsala municipality is one of the founders behind STUNS – the foundation for collaboration between the universities in Uppsala, industry and society. The municipality’s business promotion initiatives help to create attractive conditions for companies in different phases of development – from start-ups to scale-ups to established international actors. These include dialogue and collaboration with companies, cluster organisations and other public actors, and facilitating contacts with academia, not least Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
The municipality also works to put in place efficient permit processes, good contingency planning and access to appropriate land and premises, as well as skills provision for research, production and office space.
Furthermore, Uppsala municipality works strategically to create testbed opportunities in its own organisation, acting as a first customer to facilitate the more rapid translation of research and innovation into a benefit for society. We highlight Uppsala’s life science success stories in marketing material, drawing attention to the opportunities that Uppsala offers as a location, for people and businesses alike.
